Welcome to Geneva!

We are living in difficult times. The global financial and economic crisis has had an impact on health promotion. Budgets are being cut and, for many of us, attending a conference abroad is no longer something that can be taken for granted. Is it really appropriate to hold a world conference in such circumstances?

Absolutely! In the face of an uncertain future, it becomes particularly important to share ideas and experiences across national boundaries. Today, we are compelled more than ever to learn from each other, since effective models worthy of imitation and examples of best practice are especially in demand when financial resources are more restricted. And given the challenges ahead of us – from urbanization to climate change – we all need new allies. In Geneva, we wish to forge new alliances, which is why the 20th IUHPE World Conference is devoted to ‘Joining forces for Health, Equity and Sustainable Development’. International gatherings are more worthwhile than ever, and we, at Health Promotion Switzerland and the IUHPE, are pleased and proud to be organising this exciting professional event.

We wish you all interesting few days of discussions, as well as stimulating and rewarding encounters with colleagues from all over the world.

Thomas Mattig, Director, Health Promotion Switzerland
David McQueen, International Union for Health Promotion and Education [IUHPE] President

What's up today?

In 2010, the Museum of Art and History (MAH) in Geneva is celebrating the centenary of its opening to the public. An exceptional programme of exhibitions, meetings, publications and festivals has been prepared to mark the occasion. Thanks to Geneva’s many artists and cultural institutions, the programme will include theatre, dance and music.
